Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 21 December 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Dark Mocha/Black/Velvet Brown. Travis Scott is one of the line's named collaborators, with Cactus Jack releases across the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6, and his work on the 1 is the reason a whole generation of buyers learned the silhouette. This is the Retro Low OG SP in Velvet Brown, which puts that partnership on the shortest version of the shoe and in the softest possible colour. The OG designation matters: it is the original panel layout Peter Moore drew, not a later reinterpretation. Brown is a deliberate refusal of the founding red, black and white, and on a low collar it turns the most argumentative sneaker in history into something closer to a suede loafer with a court sole.
Recipe one: washed black denim, a cream heavy tee and a brown leather jacket, letting the shoe close the loop with the outerwear. Recipe two: olive fatigue trousers with a rust knit and a canvas coat, a full earth palette where the shoe is the darkest point. This is a dry weather shoe: napped brown uppers and rain do not coexist. Fit runs true for most, half up for wide feet. Treat with a suede protector before first wear, brush dry with a soft crepe brush rather than washing, keep them off salted winter pavement, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials degrade over time regardless of how the upper is treated.
Jordan Brand's music side is deep: alongside Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work, the brand has released with Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj. That programme sits on top of a longer relationship between the line and hip hop, one that started with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers in their music. Collaborator releases are also where the resale economy the Air Jordan 1 created, valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, concentrates hardest. Brown is now shorthand for that corner of the catalogue in a way no colour was thirty years ago.
The Retro Low OG is built from separate leather and textile panels, toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel, stitched over one another on a foam midsole, with a rubber outsole carrying the forefoot pivot circle. A brown execution in soft napped materials behaves differently from smooth leather: it takes marks quickly, it lightens at the flex point as the nap wears, and it cannot be wiped clean with water without leaving a ring. That fragility is part of the appeal, because a pair like this records where it has been. The low collar needs no break in, and the upper will soften across the toe box within a few weeks of regular wear.
