Origin
Released on 13 September 2019 and part of the Adilette line. This release has the Core Black/Core Black/Core Black colourway. Pharrell Williams is a designer collaborator at adidas, which places him in a lineage the company effectively invented: Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line, Stella McCartney from 2004, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. His adidas work has consistently taken the least glamorous items in the catalogue and treated them as design subjects, and the Adilette is the least glamorous of all, a slide built for wet changing room floors. This 2.0 sandal in Core Black is that idea at its most austere. There is no colour to hide behind and no graphic to explain it. You are buying a shape, a material and a name, which is what a designer collaboration is supposed to sell.
Utility
All black slides are the most versatile version of the category. Recipe one: black shorts and a plain white tee for summer heat, worn barefoot, where the tonal shoe keeps the outfit from looking like gym kit. Recipe two: charcoal trousers with a black tee and black socks, a monochrome build that lets a slide pass in situations where a bright one would not. Rinse after pool, beach or monsoon exposure so salt and grit do not sit in the footbed contour. Wipe the strap with a damp cloth rather than a brush, since abrasion dulls a tonal surface unevenly. Air dry away from direct sun to protect the moulded shape.
Influence
adidas has two ways of entering culture and Pharrell's work sits between them. The unplanned route produced Run-DMC's My Adidas in 1986 and the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. The deliberate route produced Y-3 with Yohji Yamamoto and the Stella McCartney partnership from 2004, which set the template every luxury house later copied. A musician working as a designer collaborator on a slide belongs to both traditions at once, and it explains why an all black Adilette carries weight that the general release version does not. The object is identical in purpose. What changes is who decided how it should look.
Construction
The Adilette 2.0 keeps the single wide strap over a moulded footbed, but the collaboration versions treat the surfaces as design rather than as function, with texture, branding placement and proportion doing the work. Core Black across the whole piece removes contrast entirely, so the eye reads the strap's curve and the footbed's contour instead of any logo break. That is a harder thing to get right than a colourway, because tonal execution exposes every line. The Three Stripes tradition adidas has carried since buying the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952 is present but subordinated here. Black also hides poolside wear better than any other finish, which is a practical benefit of a design decision.
