Released on 8 November 2022 and part of On Running's Cloud X 3 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black. Every On model is a Cloud something, and that naming device is doing real work: it tells you the whole company is still arguing about one sensation. Olivier Bernhard chased it from 2010 in Zurich with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, and the Cloud X branch is where the idea gets pulled sideways rather than straight ahead. Instead of a pure road distance shoe, this is the lighter, quicker footprint in the family, built for sessions that change direction and pace on demand. The third version in black strips the whole thing down to silhouette. There is nothing to read on it except the pod field along the bottom, which is the only badge On has ever really needed.
Treat this as your do everything black shoe. Session one: black training shorts, a fitted tee and cropped socks for gym work and short intervals, where a lighter shoe with multi directional support earns its place. Session two: slim black joggers with a cuff, a zip through midlayer and a cap for the commute or travel days when you want one pair to cover walking, standing and an unplanned workout. Fit is close through the midfoot, so lace to the second last eyelet if your foot is wide and leave the top row for lockdown. Rotate it out of daily wear if you also train in it, rinse laces separately, and let it dry fully between sessions.
On's route into culture ran through endurance sport before it ran through anything else. It grew out of triathlon and road running, sponsors the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein, and even built bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The mainstream turn came when Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and put his name on The Roger in July 2020, after which a tennis roster including Iga Swiatek arrived in March 2023. A black Cloud X reads as the working end of that story rather than the lifestyle end: it belongs to the athlete side of the brand, the one that got the design world's attention by being visibly built rather than styled.
The black finish here is the point, because it removes colour blocking and leaves you looking at geometry. That geometry is CloudTec: foam shaped into hollow cavities rather than a slab of cushioning compound, compressing both horizontally and vertically so the shoe absorbs a landing and then supports you through push off, with the multi directional element mattering more the moment you stop moving in a single line. That is the honest case for a Cloud X in a gym or a mixed session. On is Swiss designed and headquartered in Zurich, with manufacturing in Indonesia and Vietnam. Black hides scuffing well but shows dust, so a soft brush across the upper and through the pod openings keeps it sharp.
