Designed by Peter Moore and released on 23 February 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Sail/Khaki/Light Chocolate. The Dunk High is the version with an argument to make. Where the low disappears under a hem, the high sits above the ankle and asks to be part of the outfit, and Light Chocolate, style code DH5348 100, chooses the least aggressive way to do that: a soft milk brown against cream, closer to a suede boot than to a basketball shoe. Brown has quietly taken over the space that black used to own in casual dress, and a court silhouette in a warm neutral is the clearest evidence of it. Nike can afford this kind of restraint because the shape is already familiar, having spent decades in circulation since the company took roughly half the US athletic shoe market by 1980.
Recipe one: cream corduroy trousers, an ecru knit and a brown suede jacket, a full tonal brown fit where the high collar breaks the leg line intentionally. Recipe two: dark denim with a cuff that stops above the collar, a navy crewneck and a camel overcoat, keeping the shoe visible rather than swallowed. Highs need the hem to sit above the ankle or the whole silhouette collapses, so cuff accordingly. Brown and cream is more forgiving than white but suede or nubuck panels demand a brush and a protector spray before first wear. Keep them out of rain, since water spotting on light brown leather is difficult to reverse. Dunks run long, so consider half a size down.
Nike opened its first Niketown in downtown Portland in 1990, the same year it moved into its Beaverton world headquarters, and that retail theatre helped turn sneakers into objects people browsed rather than bought out of necessity. Once that happened, colour became the product. From the 1980s the Swoosh was already a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, with court shoes moving into mainstream youth dress before resurfacing in 1990s and 2000s casual wardrobes. Chocolate brown is the current fashion resolution of all that: a heritage silhouette repainted in a shade that works with tailoring, workwear and knitwear rather than tracksuits.
The high top adds a padded collar wrapping the ankle, an extra set of eyelets and a stiffer overall structure, so it takes longer to break in than a low and holds its shape better over time. Light Chocolate keeps contrast low, with the brown overlays sitting against a cream base so panel edges read as tonal shifts rather than hard lines, and any nubuck or textured finish shows as depth rather than pattern. Underneath is the standard Dunk platform, a foam midsole with no visible air unit and a rubber outsole with a pivot circle, which keeps the ride flat and firm. Brown leather ages well, taking on a burnished tone at the creases instead of looking damaged.
