Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 December 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Summit White. Black with summit white is the inverse of the arrangement most people expect. Put white on the base and black on the overlays and you get the well known monochrome read; flip it and the shoe goes dark first, with white doing the outlining. On a Low that produces the most discreet version of this silhouette in the catalogue, a shoe that reads as plain footwear at a glance and only reveals which model it is when you look at the Swoosh and the stepped eyestay. The design has supported that kind of quiet handling since Peter Moore drew it, because the panels were always separate pieces waiting to be reassigned.
Recipe one: black tapered trousers with a grey knit and a black overcoat, letting the white outlines be the only break in an otherwise solid fit. Recipe two: mid wash denim with a white tee and a black harrington, a straightforward pairing where the shoe anchors both colours already in play. This is an all conditions daily shoe, fine in light rain and comfortable across long days on foot. Fit runs true for most, half up if you have a wide forefoot. Wipe the black leather with a damp cloth and mild soap, brush the white panels separately so dirt does not transfer, dry away from direct heat, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials break down over time.
Jordan Brand has been a standalone division inside Nike since 1997 rather than a separate company, and by 2022 it was generating about 5.1 billion dollars, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Jordan under the royalty terms agreed in 1984. Plain colourways like this one are a meaningful part of that number, because they sell continuously rather than in spikes. In India specifically, Jordan product reaches buyers through Nike's Indian channels rather than through a separate Jordan Brand operation, which is why the everyday colourways tend to be the ones you actually find on shelves.
Separate leather panels, toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel, are stitched over one another on a foam midsole, finished with a rubber outsole carrying the pivot circle at the forefoot. A black base with summit white overlays means every panel edge is a hard line, so the construction stays completely legible even in low light. Practically this is the easiest colourway in the catalogue to own: black leather hides scuffs and street dirt, and the white is confined to smaller panels and the midsole, which are quick to wipe. The low collar needs no break in, and the leather softens across the flex point within a few weeks of regular wear.
