Miss Dior launched in 1947, named for Christian Dior's sister Catherine, which makes it the house's founding fragrance and the only major Dior name taken from a real person. This is the parfum, the concentrated interpretation of that name, and it exists because the house periodically re-cuts its historic formulas rather than freezing them. That habit is written into Dior's whole structure: the Bar jacket gets reinterpreted by every creative director, the New Look silhouette gets redrawn each decade, and the founding fragrance gets a denser reading when the perfume division wants one. Buying the parfum is buying the maximal version of the oldest idea in the building.
Two ways to run a parfum. First, the evening application: one touch at the throat, one behind each ear, worn with silk, a sari or tailoring for dinners, receptions and anything where you will be seated close to people. Second, the low-volume day version: a single touch at the inner wrist only, which gives you the fragrance for yourself and for anyone who gets within an arm's length, appropriate for offices and travel where a bigger dose would be rude. Never spray a parfum onto fabric you care about. Store it upright, boxed, away from windows and bathroom humidity, and do not decant it into a travel atomiser for long trips.
The name has carried since the house dressed Jacqueline Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Margaret, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth and Eva Peron, and Miss Dior was the scent attached to that generation of clients. The modern house widened that reach when Rihanna became the first Black woman to be a Dior spokeswoman in 2015. India got its own chapter when Dior staged Pre-Fall 2023 at the Gateway of India in Mumbai on 30 March 2023, the first full show the house had held in the country, with sari-inspired skirts and embroidery made with the Mumbai atelier Chanakya, and with Rekha, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Anushka Sharma, Freida Pinto, Simone Ashley and Anoushka Shankar attending.
Parfum is the heaviest concentration a house offers, which means the least alcohol and the slowest release. In use that translates to a fragrance that barely projects in the first minutes and then stays legible for far longer than an eau de parfum, hugging the skin instead of announcing itself across a table. Dose accordingly: one or two touches, not a cloud. A dabber or a single trigger press at the wrist and the throat is a complete application, and layering a parfum over the same line's body product extends it further without adding volume. Perfume at Dior has been under the creative direction of Francis Kurkdjian since October 2021.
