Designed by Peter Moore and released on 19 May 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Photon Dust/White. Photon Dust is a pale, cool grey with a faint warmth to it, and it produces one of the softest Dunk Lows in circulation. Where a Grey Fog pair leans neutral and technical, Photon Dust sits closer to stone, which changes how the shoe behaves next to other colours: it warms up against cream and cools down against navy. On the Low the grey takes the overlays and Swoosh over a white base, keeping contrast gentle. This is the Dunk sold as a wardrobe component rather than as a piece of basketball history, which is a position Nike has grown comfortable occupying since its silhouettes crossed into everyday dress decades ago.
Photon Dust works hardest as a bridge colour. Wear it with off white wide leg trousers and a grey knit for a soft tonal fit, or with black straight jeans and a navy overshirt so the grey lightens an otherwise dark outfit. Occasion is daily wear, casual office, campus and travel. The Dunk Low fits flat and close, so a half size up helps over thicker socks, and expect a firm ride with little cushioning. Protect the pair before first wear, dry brush regularly since dust rather than dirt is what makes pale grey look tired, and clean the white midsole with mild soap before the grey line sets permanently.
The Dunk became culturally weighty because Nike owned basketball first. Signing Michael Jordan in 1984 and running the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made the brand the shoe of the sport, and through it a fixture of hip hop. From the 1980s onward Nike models became status symbols in urban fashion and then staples of 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure dressing. The Dunk Low is built from overlapping side panels, a low collar, a Swoosh laid across the seam and a flat, wide court outsole that keeps you grounded with almost no cushioning underneath. Pale grey overlays over white make this one of the lowest contrast versions available, so the shoe reads as a single object at distance. Nike's environmental work sits behind shoes like this through Nike Grind, which recycles manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces, a reminder that even a court silhouette is part of a material loop.
