Released on 17 March 2022 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Medium Grey/White/Chlorophyll/Black. Chlorophyll is a chemistry name, not a fashion one, and that is a very Nike SB way to sell a colour: a deep plant green presented as a specimen rather than a season. Style code BQ6817 011 puts this in the modern run of SB Dunk Lows, the shoe that turned a discontinued 1980s basketball silhouette into the most collected skate shoe in the world. Nike itself dates to 1964, when Blue Ribbon Sports began importing Onitsuka Tiger shoes to Oregon, and it did not start designing under its own name and Swoosh until 1972. The Dunk arrived from the basketball side of that history and was then completely repurposed by skaters, which is the more interesting half of its story.
Utility
Green this deep behaves like a neutral. Skateboarding did not simply accept Nike. The company arrived carrying two decades of dominance built on the 1984 Michael Jordan signing, the Air Force 1 and the Air Max, all of which had made it a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and none of which meant anything to a scene with its own brands and its own memory. The line's 2005 use of Minor Threat's album artwork, which drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike, marked the low point. What rebuilt the relationship was the product: an SB Dunk in a colour like Chlorophyll is bought by skaters and collectors for the same reason, because the shoe earned its place.
Construction
A dark green upper is a practical choice on a skate shoe. The SB Dunk Low is the reinforced version of the Dunk: a fuller, more heavily padded tongue and more cushioning underfoot, because it was built to take the impact of landings rather than to imitate a court shoe on a shop shelf. Deep colours like Chlorophyll disguise the scuffing that a board inflicts on the outer forefoot, so the shoe keeps looking intact longer than a pale colourway would. Break in is minimal. The parts to watch are the lace loops, which grip tape saws through, and the panel edges, where dirt collects. The padded tongue is comfortable but slow to dry once wet.
