Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 September 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/White/White. An all white Air Jordan 1 Low is the model reduced to its geometry. Take away every colour and what remains is the panel map Peter Moore drew in the mid eighties, the toe, quarter, Swoosh, collar and heel divisions that every other colourway in the line is a variation on. There is also a quiet joke in it: the NBA rule that generated the Banned advertising required shoes to be at least fifty one percent white, and this one is entirely white. The 553558 series is the long running low make, the run that keeps the silhouette in permanent circulation, and white is its most basic and most demanding expression.
Recipe one, warm weather uniform: stone or cream chinos with a white tee and a light blue overshirt, socks white and low. Recipe two, sharp casual: navy tailored trousers with a fine knit, using the white to keep an otherwise formal outfit from reading office. Occasion is daytime, summer, travel, semi smart evenings. Fit is standard length with a close low collar, so a no show sock keeps the line clean. Care is the entire ownership experience: protect before first wear, wipe marks the day they happen, clean the midsole with mild soap and a soft brush rather than bleach, and store out of sunlight, since white leather yellows unevenly under prolonged light.
The uniform rule that made all this famous carried a five thousand dollar per game fine, the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the first Air Jordan released, and Nike chose to pay and build the Banned campaign around it. That decision is the origin of sneaker marketing as provocation. Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon carried the shoe into film language, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried it into music. A plain white low is what the shape looks like with every one of those references removed, which is the version most people can wear every day.
White leather panels across the whole upper with the Swoosh picked out by stitching and panel edges rather than by contrast, on a white midsole and rubber outsole, cut to the low collar. Without colour to separate them, the panels read by seam and shadow, which is why an all white pair looks flatter than a two tone one in dull light and much better in bright light. The first model came before the Nike Air cushioning that entered the line with the second shoe, so the ride is a stitched cupsole and foam wedge: firm and flat. White leather creases visibly at the toe from the first week and yellows slowly with age.
