Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 September 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Black/Chile Red/White colourway. Chile Red is a deep, slightly brick toned red rather than the bright fire red the line usually reaches for, and that difference is the whole character of this pair. Red, black and white have worked as Jordan brand colours in themselves since the Chicago years, so any red on a 1 carries weight, but a darker, dustier version of it reads as clothing rather than as team kit. On the Mid, the cut that keeps Peter Moore's original panel layout in year round circulation, it becomes a genuinely wearable red, the kind you can put on repeatedly without the shoe announcing itself before you have finished walking into a room.
A muted red is more flexible than a bright one, so you can push it further. Charcoal wool trousers with a black knit and a navy coat lets it work in a smart setting where fire red would not. For casual wear, indigo denim with a cream sweatshirt gives it warmth without competition. Keep other reds out of the outfit and avoid orange, which makes chile red look brown. The Mid takes a mid weight sock and suits a cuffed hem. Clean the white leather with foam before marks set, condition the red panels occasionally to stop them drying, and dry indoors away from any direct heat source.
The line's history is not only campaigns and sales figures. In the late 1980s the shoes became associated with robberies and assaults, and some American schools banned them outright, a documented and uncomfortable part of how much status the product carried at street level. That is the flipside of a shoe becoming a currency: Air Jordan is also the product that made sneaker collecting a mass activity, with the resale market it anchors valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Red pairs sat at the centre of both stories, because the colour was the most visible signal that you were wearing the shoe everyone else wanted.
White leather takes the base with chile red on the toe cap, eyestay, Swoosh and collar, following the seams of the original design so the block is clean. The mid cut supplies a padded ankle collar without the full height of a High, and the Jumpman carries branding duty. Deeper reds hold pigment better than bright ones under sun, which is a real advantage for daily wear, though the white base will still yellow with age and that is what will date the pair first.
