A blacked out 4 is the version of that lineage for people who want the silhouette recognised without the colourway announcing which release it is, which is a specific and increasingly common taste.

The 4 comes from the era after Nike Air cushioning entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so there is a genuine air unit under the heel rather than the flat foam of the first model. The upper is built from distinct panels with visible hardware and a layered lace architecture, and a dark finish makes that structure read as shadow rather than as contrast. Practically, black is the most durable colourway in the line: creasing disappears, scuffs are invisible until they are deep, and dust does not show. Any retro carries the general caveat that polyurethane midsoles degrade over time by hydrolysis, and Nike has not published which polyurethane it uses.
