Culture Note™
Released on 15 September 2022 and part of On Running's Cloudmonster line. This release has a mesh upper in All Black. On came out of Zurich in 2010, built on a garden hose. Olivier Bernhard, a six-time Ironman champion, glued lengths of hose to a prototype outsole chasing a shoe that landed soft and pushed off hard, and that experiment became CloudTec. David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti joined him, the prototype won ISPO Brandnew a month after the brand launched, and Swiss engineering turned into a running-shoe accent. The Cloudmonster arrived in 2022 as the loud one: On's max-cushioned road trainer, carrying more CloudTec elements than anything the brand had built before. The Cloudmonster All Black, article number 61.99025, strips that concept back to a single colour. Same oversized clouds, same Speedboard, none of the visual noise. It is the Cloudmonster for people who want the ride without announcing it.
Use it for the miles you actually log: easy daily runs and long steady efforts, where the max cushioning and the rocker do the work. Testers found it less happy at tempo pace, so leave speed sessions to something lighter. Off the run, all black with grey sweatpants or black tech trousers and a plain hoodie is the easy win, and it holds up under wide-leg denim with the pods peeking out at the ankle. On lists the Cloudmonster as true to size, but a large share of runners report it running slightly small with a shallow, tapered toebox, so if you run wide or sit between sizes, try half a size up before you buy the Cloudmonster All Black in India. Rinse grit out of the pod gaps every few runs, air dry away from heat, never machine wash.
On went from Swiss niche to a brand you see in cafes as often as at start lines, and the Cloudmonster is a big reason why. Roger Federer became a shareholder in 2019 and the company listed on the NYSE in 2021, but the street-level shift came from shoes like this one: sole geometry so distinctive that the pods alone identify the brand from across a room. The All Black flips the formula. Blacked-out clouds, black-on-black Cloudmonster branding down the lateral panel, and the small red Swiss Engineering tab at the heel as the only break, so it reads as a serious running shoe on a run and as a chunky monochrome trainer everywhere else. That dual life is what makes it a year-round pick.
The upper is breathable engineered mesh in polyester with synthetic overlays for lockdown, which in practice means the shoe vents properly on a humid morning and still holds your midfoot through a corner. Underneath sit the oversized CloudTec pods, the largest On had engineered at that point, each compressing independently on landing so impact spreads instead of landing in one spot. Helion superfoam fills them, and a Speedboard runs through the midsole as a plate that stores that compression and hands it back at toe-off. A pronounced forefoot rocker does the rest, tipping you forward so the stride rolls instead of thudding flat. Rubber under the pods handles grip. Roughly 280 grams in a men's US 9, at a 6 mm heel-to-toe drop.
