    Culture Note™

Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 28 March 2019 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has the White/Black colourway. The Blazer dates from the period when Nike had only just become Nike. Blue Ribbon Sports ended its Onitsuka Tiger distribution relationship in 1972 and launched its own line under a name coined by employee Jeff Johnson, with the Swoosh Carolyn Davidson had drawn and first used on 18 June 1971. The Blazer is basketball from that founding era, and the Mid 77 Vintage is built to look like a pair that has been sitting in a stockroom ever since: aged midsole, exposed foam tongue, an oversized Swoosh running down the panel. In Black on white leather, it is the most graphic version of that shape, a black mark on a pale field, with none of the colour softening that a coloured execution provides.
First recipe: dark straight leg jeans with a white tee and a black leather jacket, where the shoe repeats the black and white of the outfit exactly and nothing else is needed. Second recipe: grey wool trousers with a navy knit and a camel coat, a smarter pairing where a black Swoosh on white leather works as a graphic full stop. This colourway goes with everything, which is the whole reason black and white executions exist. Blazers fit long and narrow, so half a size down suits wide feet, and the mid collar can be laced high for structure or left loose. Condition the white leather occasionally, clean the aged midsole gently, and let the tongue foam soften on its own.
Nike's cultural position was built in the late 1980s through Michael Jordan, signed in 1984, and through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, which made the brand the shoe of basketball and then of hip hop. The Blazer sat outside that surge. Its flat sole and unadorned shape sent it to skateboarding, art schools and anyone who wanted the brand without the broadcast, and it has stayed there. Nike SB later formalised the relationship with skate culture, sometimes clumsily: its 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology. A black and white Vintage Blazer is the earliest version of Nike, worn as a shape rather than a badge.
Style code BQ6806 100 covers the black and white Vintage build. The construction is deliberately pre modern: a mid cut leather panel upper, a soft padded collar, an exposed foam tongue that flattens forward with wear, and a flat vulcanised style midsole finished in aged off white rather than bright white. There is no visible cushioning and there should not be, because this shape predates the 1987 Air Max that made pressurised Nike Air a design feature. The ride is firm and flat, which is why skaters kept the Blazer alive long after basketball moved on. In black on white, the stitch lines and the leather grain are the only texture, so the quality of the panels is fully exposed.
