    Culture Note™

Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 10 October 2019 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has the black/black-anthracite colourway. The Swoosh you are looking at twice on this shoe was drawn by a graphic design student, Carolyn Davidson, first used on 18 June 1971 and registered as a trademark on 22 January 1974. For most of Nike's life that mark has appeared once per side and been left alone. The sacai Blazer Mid is what happens when a designer treats it as raw material instead of scripture, splitting the Blazer down its length and letting two of everything sit on one foot. Black Grey is the version that hides the trick until you get close: the layers are tonal, the greys shade into the blacks, and the doubled Swoosh reads almost as a single thickened stripe from across a room. It is the quiet configuration of a loud idea.
Black Grey is the pair you can wear when you do not want the shoe to be the announcement. Recipe one: black wide leg trousers with a break at the ankle, a grey crewneck, a black overshirt, so the doubled layers on the shoe echo the layers above them. Recipe two: raw indigo denim cuffed once, a plain white tee, a grey zip hoodie, letting the tonal upper anchor a loud wash of denim. Size true to your usual Nike, but lace loosely through the upper eyelets because two tongues need somewhere to go. Brush the grey panels dry before they take on a shine, keep them away from rain, and never machine wash a shoe with this much layered stitching.
Nike's authority in this space was not built by design departments, it was built by basketball becoming hip hop's uniform. The 1984 Michael Jordan signing, marketed through Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon, turned Nike into the shoe of the sport and then of the culture around it, and from the 1980s onward Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became status markers in urban and hip hop dress before returning as 1990s and 2000s casual staples. A deconstruction like this only reads as an event because the original silhouette carries that much weight. You are wearing the joke and the source material at once, which is precisely why the tonal black and grey execution lands harder than a bright one would.
This is a mid cut court shoe rebuilt as two mid cut court shoes stacked into one, so expect doubled tongues, doubled collars and doubled Swoosh panels layered across the quarter in black and grey. That extra material is the whole point and it changes how the shoe behaves: it sits taller on the foot, it holds its shape rather than collapsing at the ankle, and it needs a slightly longer break in than a standard Blazer because there is simply more upper to soften. The extended tongues and the stacked laces are structural, not decorative, so do not trim or tuck them flat. Black and grey also forgive city wear better than any pale colourway of this shoe, which is worth knowing before you commit.
