Designed by Designer. This piece is made in upper material. Tech Fleece is Nike's attempt to make a sweatshirt behave like outerwear, and the full-zip hoodie is the piece that carries the idea best because the zip lets the fabric hold its own line down the front. This one comes out of the NOCTA imprint, a label-within-Nike arrangement that lets a partner set the tone while Nike supplies the pattern-making and the fabric platform. Black is the version of this hoodie people actually reach for, the one that removes all decoration and leaves you with cut, weight and drape. Nike has been building a wardrobe as well as a kit bag since Dri-FIT turned performance fabric into everyday cloth, and this sits at the far end of that arc: sportswear engineered to look like it belongs indoors.
Two ways to wear it. First, as a mid-layer under a black shell or a leather jacket, hood out over the collar, with straight black trousers and a low sneaker, which is the cleanest reading of the piece. Second, zipped to the chin over a plain tee with wide grey sweatpants and a chunky trainer, letting the hood stand and frame the face. Size true for a fitted look, one up if you want the shoulder to drop. Best for cold-weather travel, transit, gym approach and evenings, less good for high-output training. Nike's authority in casual clothing was won on the shoe side first, through basketball and, through basketball, hip hop, and it has been spending that authority upward into apparel ever since. Artist and musician partnerships are the current form of that spend, the same instinct that had Spike Lee directing Air Jordan advertising as Mars Blackmon and that built Just Do It into a piece of language rather than a tagline. Tech Fleece works by bonding a lightweight foam-like core between two thin knit faces, so you get warmth from air rather than from bulk, which is why the panel edges look almost cut rather than sewn. On a zip hoodie that shows in the way the front holds a clean vertical rather than rumpling. Expect a full-length zip, a hood that stands rather than collapses, and seams placed to keep the torso panels unbroken. The black colourway hides every one of those seams, so the piece reads as a single mass and lives or dies on fit. Wearing it, the trade-off is honest: it is warmer than its weight suggests and less breathable than a loopback cotton hoodie once you are actually moving.
