Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 July 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Active Pink/Bordeaux/Black. Bordeaux on a women's Mid is a wine dark red that deliberately sidesteps the brand's own signal. Chicago red, black and white function as house colours, so a deep burgundy reads as adjacent rather than obedient: recognisably in the family, clearly not on the team. SE marks it as a special edition, meaning the brand is free to move materials and details rather than reproducing a 1985 build. Underneath is still the shape Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed because it was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own. Bordeaux is that shape dressed for the evening.
Recipe one: black tailored trousers, a black knit, and gold jewellery, where the burgundy warms an otherwise severe outfit and reads far dressier than a sneaker should. Recipe two: dark indigo jeans, a cream cable knit, and a camel coat, an autumn build where the shoe is the deepest colour in frame. Black or burgundy socks, never white, since white cuts the leg line and makes the colour look brighter than it is. Fit true to size, up half if you are wide footed. Wipe with a damp cloth, avoid solvents that lift dark dye, and keep the pair out of long sun so the red does not shift brown.
The 1 earns the right to be reinterpreted because it is the most culturally loaded silhouette Nike owns. It anchors sneaker collecting as a mass activity, sits at the centre of a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, and was pushed into film language by Spike Lee, who directed the earliest advertising and played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put it into music. Once a shoe reaches that status, colour stops being a team reference and starts being a wardrobe decision, which is exactly what a Bordeaux special edition is.
The Mid collar sits at the ankle bone, which on a deep colour makes the shoe read as compact rather than tall. Dark saturated reds are among the most forgiving finishes to own: scuffing sinks into the tone rather than sitting on top of it, and creasing across the toe box reads as shadow. Special edition builds usually mix materials between panels, so expect different areas to age at different rates and to need different care. The women's last runs narrower through the midfoot. Lace firmly through the lower rows and ease at the collar so the shoe keeps a relaxed line, which suits this colour better than a tight, upright collar does.
