Released on 19 October 2023 and part of On Running's Cloudvista line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/White. Black and white is the hardest colourway to hide behind, and on a Cloudvista it does something useful: it draws a hard outline around the CloudTec pods so the geometry that On has argued for since 2010 becomes the entire design. The company started when Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, glued cut sections of garden hose to a sole to test a hollow shape that lands soft and pushes off firm, an idea Nike had rejected. The women's Cloudvista carries that same visible logic into a shoe built for ground that varies. In this make-up nothing distracts from the sole, which is precisely why it works as well with everyday clothes as with running kit.
Lean into the monochrome. For trail and gravel, wear it with black tights or cropped leggings and a white or grey technical layer, letting the sole contrast do the work. For city days, try black straight-leg trousers with a slight crop at the ankle and an oversized white shirt, which turns a trail shoe into a deliberate flat. It handles mixed terrain, travel and long walking days well, and is more useful than a road shoe when the surface is unpredictable. Brush the pods out after muddy use, since packed grit dulls the rebound. Spot clean the black upper with a damp cloth and air dry, avoiding the machine, which flattens structured soles.
On is fifteen years old and behaves like a company with more time behind it, which is the strangest thing about its rise. It moved from Swiss triathlon to roughly 40 percent of the Swiss running shoe market and 10 percent of Germany's by 2019, then to a New York listing in September 2021. Roger Federer's shareholding from November 2019 gave it mainstream reach, and the tennis roster from March 2023, including world number one Iga Swiatek, kept it there. A black and white Cloudvista is the version of that story with the volume down: recognisable to anyone who knows the pods, invisible to anyone who does not.
The house system is CloudTec, and On is specific that it is a structure rather than a cushioning material: foam engineered into specialised geometries, with pods that compress both horizontally and vertically to absorb impact and support the foot in several directions through the stride. On a Cloudvista that multi-directional support is the point, because unstable ground loads the foot at angles a road shoe never sees. The black upper with white sole detailing makes the pods legible from a distance and hides trail marking better than any pale colourway will. It is a women's-specific make-up, so expect the fit to run narrower through the midfoot than the unisex versions of the same platform.
