Released on 12 August 2022 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Metallic Silver/Metallic Gold. The number on this shoe points straight back to the start: 1906, the year William J Riley began the New Balance Arch Support Company outside Boston. The 1906R itself belongs to the brand's later technical running era, all engineered panels and visible support structure, built when running shoes were designed to look like equipment. Metallic Silver with Metallic Gold pushes that engineering read to its limit. A chrome upper broken by gold hits turns a functional runner into something closer to hardware, which is a joke only New Balance can make, because the brand spent a century being the least flashy name in the category. Wearing two metallics at once is a statement precisely because the model underneath is so unfashionably serious.
Metallics need discipline. Recipe one: full black, black straight trousers, black tee, black outerwear, so the silver and gold read as jewellery for the feet. Recipe two: mid grey sweatpants with a white tee and a denim jacket, where the chrome upper pulls the grey up rather than clashing with it. Avoid brown and warm earth tones, which make the gold look muddy. This is a performance last, so wear a proper running sock and lace through the top eyelet for heel lock. Clean metallic panels with a damp microfibre cloth only, never a brush, since abrasives dull the finish permanently. Store them in a bag away from direct sun.
New Balance's deepest cultural thread is not celebrity, it is running itself. The Trackster of 1960 was the first running shoe offered in varying widths and spread through YMCA fitness programmes and college cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University, and the brand's sponsorship of New York Road Runners keeps it anchored in the amateur running community rather than in stadium sport. That is the lineage a 1906R carries, even in chrome. The model exists because runners wanted structure, and the metallic finish only works as a fashion object because the shape it sits on was engineered for something else first. That tension is the whole appeal.
This is a layered running upper, mesh underneath with structured overlays worked over it, finished here in metallic silver with gold detailing rather than the muted greys the model usually wears. The metallic surface changes how you treat it: it holds shine but shows creasing and scuffing more plainly than suede, so the flex point across the toe will be the first place the finish reads as worn. Cushioning comes from ABZORB, New Balance's foam and rubber polymer blend built to disperse heel strike impact before it climbs into the knees and hips, softer and lighter than the ENCAP system that structures the 990 and 574. Multiple width fittings apply here as across the range, and on a running last that is the difference between locked in and loose.
