Part of Nike's Air Zoom Vomero 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Black/White/Black. The Vomero 5 is a late 2000s road running shoe that found a second life as a lifestyle object, which is a pattern Nike has repeated since the Dunk left the hardwood. What makes this particular silhouette work outside running is its bulk: layered panels, a chunky midsole and a technical, slightly overbuilt look that reads as archive rather than current. Triple Black strips out every panel contrast the shoe normally uses to show off that layering, so what you are left with is pure volume and texture. The result is a running shoe that behaves like a boot in an outfit, filling out the bottom of a silhouette without adding colour. It is the least decorative way to wear one of the loudest shapes in Nike's revival programme.
First recipe: black cargo trousers with a black bomber and a grey hoodie underneath, an all dark stack where the shoe adds mass at the ankle and nothing else. Second recipe: dark indigo jeans with a cream knit and a black overcoat, where the black runner grounds a smarter outfit that would look heavy in a boot. Triple black is the most versatile colourway in this silhouette and the most forgiving in bad weather. Layered runners fit true to size with a secure midfoot, and if you are between sizes go up rather than down because of the padded collar. Brush the mesh and suede dry, avoid soaking, and use a suede eraser on scuffs rather than water.
Nike's archive revivals work because the originals were genuine performance products rather than fashion shoes, and running is the deepest part of that archive. The company exists because Bill Bowerman thought American runners deserved better equipment and started Blue Ribbon Sports with Phil Knight in 1964, and it built its identity through Steve Prefontaine, its first track endorser. Decades later the same running silhouettes reappeared in casual and athleisure wardrobes, the way Air Max and Air Force models had before them. Triple black is how a technical shape gets adopted by people who want the volume without the sport signal, and it is a large part of why the Vomero 5 returned at all.
Style code BV1358 003 covers the all black execution. This is a layered runner: mesh base panels with synthetic and suede style overlays stacked over them, on a substantial midsole carrying Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the foam that has been the company's cushioning platform since long before it was made visible in 1987. Zoom is the low profile, responsive version of that system used in running. In a single colour, the only thing separating the panels is finish, so smooth against mesh against suede does all the visual work, which is why triple black executions of busy shoes tend to look more expensive than they are. Expect weight and a cushioned, slightly plush ride.
