Designed by Peter Moore and released on 26 November 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Dark Chocolate/Archaeo Brown/Black/Crimson Bliss. Dark Chocolate is Jordan Brand working in a register the original never used. The Air Jordan 1 was born in Chicago colours, red, black and white, a palette so specific it became a brand asset on its own. A deep brown SE makeup steps away from all of that and lands somewhere closer to workwear and heritage boots than to a basketball court. That is the point of the SE designation: special editions exist to take the 1985 silhouette drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore into materials and tones the performance line would never have approved. Style code DC7294 200 sits in the Mid family, the everyday version of the shoe, which is exactly where a brown pair belongs.
Brown is the colour that lets this silhouette pass in adult clothes. Wear it with raw indigo denim, a cream fisherman knit and a tan jacket, which reads as heritage rather than sportswear. The second recipe is olive fatigue trousers with a black tee and a brown belt, matching leather to leather. Avoid pairing it with pure black trousers, since brown against black flattens both. Cuff the hem so the collar reads. These run long for many feet, so consider a half size down. Condition the leather every few months, wipe salt off immediately in wet weather, and let them dry naturally, since heat is what cracks a brown finish first.
The Air Jordan 1's authority came from the collision of basketball and hip hop, with Spike Lee directing Nike's advertising and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming the shoes on record. What earned the model its second life is that it accepts any treatment: Jordan Brand has run it through Off-White with Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. Earth tone makeups belong to the era in which the Air Jordan 1 competes with a boot rather than with a basketball shoe, dressed with heavy denim and outerwear instead of shorts.
Brown covers the panels in a tone dark enough to read as near black in low light and clearly warm in daylight, which is what makes it the most versatile colourway in this whole category. The Mid collar stops below the ankle bone, so the shoe breaks in faster than a High and sits more easily under a trouser hem. The panel map is the 1985 one: separate toe, quarter and collar sections divided by visible stitching, with the Swoosh laid across the side. Brown leather shows conditioning better than white does, so this pair rewards care with depth rather than just staying clean. Toe creasing will darken along the fold, which on brown looks intentional.
