Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 11 January 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Dark Charcoal/Black. The Air Jordan 3 is the hinge of the entire line. It is the first shoe Tinker Hatfield designed after Nike handed him the programme, and it introduced two things that still define the brand: the grey cracked elephant print and the Jumpman on the tongue, replacing the Wings mark of the earliest era. Black Cat takes that landmark model and removes the contrast entirely, running the whole shoe in black so the elephant print survives only as texture. It is the most severe way to present a 3, and it works precisely because the silhouette is famous enough to be recognised in silhouette alone. Nothing about this pair explains itself, which is the point.
Two recipes. First, all black technical trousers with a black shell jacket, a full blackout where the elephant print is the only texture change in the outfit. Second, charcoal wool trousers with a black knit, taking the 3 somewhere close to smart without pretending it is a dress shoe. This is a performance footwear classification, so it will handle a full day standing, but it is not a running shoe and should not be treated as one. Size true to length with a snug heel. Brush with a suede brush rather than wiping, keep it out of rain, and refresh the nap after each wear so the black stays even.
The 3 is where Air Jordan stopped being a basketball shoe and became a design series with its own language, which is exactly what let Jordan Brand become a standalone Nike division in 1997 and reach about 5.1 billion dollars by 2022. Elephant print is now the most recognisable material code in the catalogue, borrowed across models and collaborations for decades. The Jumpman on the tongue of this shoe is Peter Moore's staged photograph of Jordan in Bulls gear recreating a pose, a mark that Nike successfully defended in court. Black Cat versions of Jordans have their own following among people who want the heritage without the colour theatre.
The 3 carries Nike Air cushioning, in the line since the second model, and the elephant print panelling that Hatfield introduced here and that now signals the brand on its own without a logo. In a tonal black execution that print becomes a tactile detail rather than a graphic one, readable up close and invisible across a room. Black nubuck style uppers pick up dust and water spotting more visibly than smooth leather, so brushing matters more than wiping. Any tonal Jordan lives or dies on how evenly it ages: a scuff on a black 3 shows as a lighter patch rather than as a mark. Nike has never published its midsole polyurethane, so rotate rather than storing on the assumption of indefinite life.
