Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 31 March 2017 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/White-Vachetta Tan. The Retro Low OG is the Air Jordan 1 stripped to its pattern: Peter Moore's 1985 panelling with the ankle collar cut away, so the shoe stops being basketball equipment and starts being a leather shoe with a famous outline. White Vachetta, style code 905136 100, takes that further by naming its material in the colourway. Vachetta is untreated tan leather, the kind that darkens with sun and handling rather than staying as it left the box. Pairing it with white gives you a shoe that arrives pale and finishes somewhere else entirely, which is an unusual promise from a line built on repeatable retros.
White and tan is a warm weather palette, so build around it. Cream linen trousers, a navy tee and a light tan belt lets the vachetta tone repeat rather than clash. For a sharper version, off-white chinos with a pale blue shirt and no socks visible turns the shoe into a summer loafer substitute. Low tops sit close to the ankle, so use a low-cut sock with a proper heel grip, not a no-show that slides. Protect the vachetta before first wear with a colourless spray, accept that it will still deepen, and clean the white panels separately with a mild solution so you do not push dye across. Store out of direct sunlight.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market it anchors valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Its cultural route ran through basketball into hip hop, with Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting the shoes into music. Material-led releases like this one belong to the later phase, after 1997, when Jordan Brand ran as a standalone division inside Nike with its own apparel and collaborations and could treat its own archive as raw stock.
White panels carry the body, with the tan vachetta tone worked into the contrast blocks so the shoe reads warm rather than clinical. The low cut means less structure around the ankle and a faster break-in than any high top in the line, and a rubber cupsole runs beneath. The 905136 code family sits in the Retro Low OG run, which keeps the original panel shapes rather than the simplified modern low. Untreated leather is the thing to understand here: it takes on tone from light, oils and rain, and it will not go back. That is the character, not a defect, but it does mean this is not a wet weather shoe.
