Designed by Peter Moore and released on 27 October 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Velvet Brown/Sanddrift/Rugged Orange. The Dunk Low's naming culture is bottom up. Nike does not call these pairs panda shoes, buyers do, and the label stuck because the two tone panel blocking makes an animal read instantly. Red Panda is the wittier entry in that family, swapping black for a rust red against a pale base and turning a nickname into an actual species. That is the Dunk Low working exactly as designed: the shape has been settled for so long that colour is the only variable left, and a good pairing is enough to make a whole release. The Swoosh, which Carolyn Davidson drew and Nike first used in June 1971, is the pivot the entire block turns around on a shoe this simple.
Rust red is a warmer, more wearable red than a primary, so build around earth tones. Recipe one: cream wide leg trousers, a brown or oatmeal knit and a tan jacket, letting the shoe be the anchor at the bottom of a tonal outfit. Recipe two: dark indigo jeans with a black tee and a rust or burgundy cap, tying the shoe to one detail up top. It works day to evening and looks intentional with smart casual, which most novelty Dunks do not. Size as usual for a Dunk Low. Use a soft brush on the red panels, avoid harsh solvents that lift warm dyes, and treat the pale base with a foam cleaner before stains set.
The Dunk owes its second life to the same current that made Air Force 1s and Air Max models staples of urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, then carried them into 1990s and 2000s casual dress. What is different now is that the naming happens in public, on feeds and forums, before Nike gets a say. That is a direct inheritance from the era when Nike's voice was the loudest thing in the room, when Just Do It, written in 1988 by Dan Wieden, was named a top five slogan of the twentieth century by Advertising Age. The audience learned the language and started writing in it.
Two tone panelling puts all the pressure on edge quality, because there is nowhere for a sloppy seam to hide when a warm red meets a pale base. The Dunk Low's overlay pattern splits the upper into large flat fields, which is why the silhouette photographs so well and why every colour decision reads as a decision. Underneath is the outsole logic Bowerman started when he poured rubber into a waffle iron chasing grip and lightness, now settled into a flat wide forefoot and a rubber tread that grips dry pavement well. Red panels hold their colour better than pastels but bleed if soaked, so keep the pair away from long water exposure and clean the light base separately from the red.
