Released on 28 October 2020 and part of the Court Royale line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White. Tennis was where Nike signed its first professional athlete, Ilie Nastase, before the track and basketball stories took over, and the court shoe has stayed in the range ever since as the company's plainest object. The Court Royale 2 Low is that shape at its most stripped back, and Black White inverts the expected order. A court shoe is supposed to be white with a coloured mark. This one is black with white on the sole and the Swoosh, which turns a sports club silhouette into something closer to a city shoe. That inversion is worth more than it sounds. It moves the shoe out of the summer wardrobe and into year round use, and it makes the tennis reference a shape memory rather than a costume.
First recipe: black jeans, a grey marl sweatshirt and a black overshirt, a monochrome stack where the white sole is the only break in the column. Second recipe: olive cargo trousers with a white tee and a black cap, where the black upper anchors a mid tone outfit. Black uppers hide city dirt and let you wear these through a wet season without thinking about them, which is exactly why you would choose this over the white pair. Fit is narrow and low volume like most court shoes, so size true and use the lacing rather than the size to fix a high instep. The white midsole is the part that ages, so clean it with mild soap and a soft brush and keep the upper dry.
From the 1980s onward Nike sat at the centre of urban and hip hop fashion, mainly through Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models, and mainly in white. Black versions of court silhouettes served a different purpose entirely, the shoe you wear when you do not want the shoe noticed. That is a real category, and the company has always quietly served it alongside the loud one. Nike's voice in this period came from Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired with the 80 year old runner Walt Stack, a line that worked precisely because it was short enough to mean anything. A black on white court shoe operates on the same logic.
Style code CQ9246 001 identifies the black execution: a low cut smooth upper with a white Swoosh, sitting on a white rubber cup outsole with the flat court tread that gives these shoes their planted feel. There is no midsole window, no visible air, no plate. The engineering interest is in the last and the sole geometry, which comes from a sport where you push laterally as hard as you push forward, so the shoe is wider through the forefoot base than a runner and lower at the heel. Nike's outsole thinking has run in a straight line from Bowerman's waffle iron experiments to every patterned rubber tread since: cut the surface so it grips in more than one direction.
