The adiFOM Q is what happens when adidas stops treating a shoe as an assembly of parts and moulds it as one object. The Q shape refers to the sculpted, cut through form of the upper, a design that only exists because injection moulded foam allows shapes that stitched leather never could. It belongs to the same appetite for spectacle that produced the adidas 1 of 2005, marketed as the world's first intelligent shoe with a microprocessor running five million calculations a second, and springblade with its splayed blades instead of foam. Clay Strata is the colourway that grounds it, a muted terracotta brown that makes an aggressively futuristic silhouette look like pottery rather than plastic. That contradiction is the appeal.
Two ways. First, lean into the material: wide leg technical trousers in black or stone with a boxy top, and let the moulded shape be the only sculptural element in the fit. Second, warm it up: brown and cream layers where Clay Strata reads as part of an earth palette rather than as a spaceship. Best as a short distance shoe, for errands, studio days and warm weather, since foam breathes through the openings. Sizing on moulded foam runs roomy and there is no lace adjustment, so try before buying if possible and consider a half size down. Wipe clean with soap and water, keep away from heat sources which deform foam permanently, and never machine wash.
adidas has always alternated between engineering claims and cultural adoption, and moulded foam footwear is where the current version of that argument sits. It divides people, which is the point: after decades of the Superstar and Stan Smith functioning as safe base layer shoes, Originals needs product that cannot be worn by everyone. The Trefoil, designed in 1971 for the Munich Olympics and now the mark of Originals, ends up on shoes that look nothing like anything from 1971, which is the healthiest thing a heritage brand can do. Clay Strata is the version aimed at people who want the radical shape without the neon that usually comes with it.
This is a single material shoe. The body is moulded foam, which means no seams to fail, no panels to delaminate and a shoe that weighs almost nothing in the hand. The Three Stripes are formed into the surface rather than stitched on, a complete reversal of their origin as reinforcement stitching, and the cut through openings across the upper are structural as well as decorative because they control where the foam flexes. Clay Strata across the whole body means light falls on the curves rather than on contrast lines, so you read the sculpture. Foam shoes are warm and forgiving underfoot but have no traditional lacing lockdown, so the fit comes from the shape holding your foot.
