Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 12 September 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 5 line. This release has the Apple Green/Black/Yellow Strike/Black colourway. College basketball is part of Jordan Brand's structure, not a side project: programmes carrying the brand include North Carolina, Michael Jordan's own university, plus Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan, and the brand became sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016. An Oregon coded Air Jordan 5 Retro SE sits in that campus tradition, taking Tinker Hatfield's most aggressive silhouette and dressing it in a school palette. The 5 is from the stretch where the line stopped being one signature shoe and became a design series with its own vocabulary, and school make ups are the clearest evidence that the vocabulary now works outside professional sport.
School colours want an outfit that does not compete. First: black straight leg jeans, a plain heavyweight tee in one of the shoe's tones, black socks, so the colour pairing reads as intentional rather than as a costume. Second: grey sweatpants cuffed just above the collar with a grey hoodie, which is how these shoes actually get worn on campus. Occasion is daytime, casual, dry. Fit is true to size with a secure midfoot once the lace lock is engaged. The Air Jordan 5's identity is in its geometry: the shark tooth pattern along the midsole, the lace lock at the throat, the high eyelet row and the reflective tongue. A Special Edition treatment keeps that architecture and changes surface, usually mixing nubuck or suede panels with contrast trims so the teeth stay visible from a distance. Nike Air cushioning has been in the range since the Air Jordan II and sits under a rubber outsole.
