Released on 1 July 2024 and part of Hoka's Speedgoat 6 line. This release has a woven upper in Stellar Grey/Alabaster. Stellar Grey is the Speedgoat for people who use their trail shoe as a general shoe. The model is Hoka's technical mountain option, descended directly from the problem the company was founded to solve in Annecy in 2009, which was how to run downhill faster without your quads giving out. Six versions in, that brief has not changed. What has changed is the palette: a cool, mineral grey with muted tonal detailing instead of the emergency colours trail running usually reaches for. The shoe still wants rock, root and gradient. It just no longer looks out of place walking back through a town centre afterwards.
Two ways to run it. Technical days: Stellar Grey Speedgoat 6 with a mid-height merino sock and a fitted short, for rocky, steep, loose terrain where grip and protection matter more than ground feel. Mixed use: dark grey trousers, a fleece and a shell for hiking or travel days, since the muted palette carries into ordinary clothes. Fit snug through the midfoot with genuine toe room for long descents. Do not use trail lugs as a road shoe habit, since the outsole will wear unevenly. Dry the mud, brush it off, remove the insole, air dry indoors, and never put it near a machine or a heater.
Hoka's authority on trail is not marketing, it is sponsorship and results. The brand became a mainstay at Western States and UTMB, and Jim Walmsley, signed shortly after his 2016 Western States attempt, defined the era: multiple Western States titles, and in 2023 the first American man to win UTMB, setting a course record while running in prototypes of the Tecton X 3. Hoka went on to become title sponsor of UTMB itself. Mike Wardian is another sponsored ultrarunning athlete in that world. When you buy any Speedgoat you are buying into a discipline the brand did not just enter, it underwrote.
Trail build logic dominates here. The oversized cushioned stack exists to absorb repeated hard landings over long descents, which is where mountain running does its real damage, and Hoka's habit of sinking the heel into the midsole rather than seating it on top is what makes that height usable on ground that tilts. Rocker geometry helps the foot roll through uneven contact instead of jarring against it. The upper is a tighter, more reinforced weave than a road mesh, because abrasion resistance and debris exclusion outrank breathability on trail. Stellar Grey conceals dust and dry dirt better than a light colourway, though wet clay will still show on the midsole sidewall.
