Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 25 July 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Muslin/White/Black. This is the Air Jordan 4 handed to Off-White under Virgil Abloh, one of the named partners in Jordan Brand's collaboration programme alongside Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. Sail is the colour that made the pairing legible: a warm off white run across a model from the Tinker Hatfield era, the stretch after the Air Jordan 3 when the line became a design series with its own language instead of a yearly basketball release. Abloh's method was to take a finished object apart in public and show you the parts, and the 4 is the ideal test case because it is already the most componentised shoe in the early line, built from a lace cage, netting quarters, a moulded heel and a visible cushioning stack.
Keep the outfit plain and let the shoe be the complicated thing. Straight black trousers, a white tee and an unstructured jacket works, since the sail warmth stops the black from looking severe. The second route is full neutral: beige carpenter pants, an oatmeal knit and a canvas overshirt, where the shoe disappears into the palette and only its structure shows. Save it for dry days and low mud, because the netting is the hardest part of the shoe to clean. Size to your usual length. Store it stuffed so the collar keeps its shape, and never machine wash: water through the mesh will lift the sail tone unevenly.
Abloh's work with Jordan Brand is the clearest example of the line crossing fully into fashion, and it happened because Jordan Brand had been a standalone Nike division since 1997, free to trade on its own terms. The commercial scale followed: by 2022 the division was generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike. On the resale side, the Air Jordan 1 had already built a collector market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, and the Off-White releases became its most quoted objects. Wearing a Sail pair is a design reference as much as a sneaker choice, which is why it turns up more often in studios than on courts.
Sail is a warm white, so every element on the shoe has to be read by shape and texture rather than colour: the winged lace cage that adjusts fit across the midfoot, the open netting on the quarters that was there to save weight, the heel structure that holds the collar. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the Air Jordan 2 and sits under the foot here, above a rubber outsole. A deconstructed treatment means exposed edges and visible assembly are part of the design rather than flaws, which changes the care logic: you are maintaining a surface that is meant to look worked, not pristine. Keep the netting dry and brush it soft.
