After the first shoe sold out its initial fifty thousand pairs and passed one hundred and fifty million dollars in sales, Nike handed the line to Tinker Hatfield, who from the third model onward turned a signature sneaker into a design series with its own vocabulary. Cement print, the grey speckled pattern introduced on the Jordan 3, is the most recognisable code in that vocabulary, and Red Cement moves it out of grey and into a colourway where the speckle sits against a red that reads as heat rather than as team red. On the 4, with its winged eyelets and mesh netting, the print becomes an accent rather than a panel, which is exactly why this version feels tuned rather than loud.
Red Cement needs volume around it. Pair it with wide leg grey sweatpants and a plain black hoodie so the red pops from a cool base, or with raw dark denim and a white tee when you want the colourway to be the entire outfit. The 4 sits tall, so it eats stacked hems: cuff or crop rather than letting fabric bunch over the eyelets. Fit runs slightly narrow through the midfoot for wide feet, and going true to size works for most. Brush the netting rather than wiping it, keep water off the speckled midsole since grime settles into the texture, and store them upright rather than stacked so the wings hold shape.
The Jordan 4 sits at the centre of the moment when Air Jordan stopped being a basketball product and became a cultural object, the period when rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers in their music. Travis Scott has collaborated on Cactus Jack versions of the 1, the 4 and the 6, which keeps this silhouette in the current conversation rather than only in the archive. Cement print has now escaped the shoe entirely: put that grey speckle on anything and people read Jordan before they read the logo, which is a rare thing for a material code to achieve.
The Jordan 4 is one of the most structurally busy shoes in the line: netting panels set into the quarter for airflow, plastic winged eyelets that let you lace the shoe wide or pull it tight across the midfoot, a moulded heel counter and a sculpted midsole. Nike Air cushioning entered the line from the second model, and the 4 carries it under a firm foam midsole, so it feels more supported than a Jordan 1 and noticeably less flat. The speckled print appears on the midsole and detailing rather than covering the upper. Because the eyelets are plastic, lace them evenly and avoid yanking one side tight, which stresses the wing over time.
