Adidas Sl 72 Rs Light Blue Better Scarlet
Adidas Sl 72 Rs Light Blue Better Scarlet
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
The SL 72 comes out of the moment adidas was building around the 1972 Munich Olympics, the games the brand designed its new Trefoil logo for. SL stood for super light, and the shoe was a running trainer at a point when running shoes were still made of nylon and suede rather than moulded plastic, when the way you made a shoe faster was to remove material from it. The RS is a modern reworking of that shape. Light Blue with Better Scarlet is a period correct pairing, the kind of pastel and primary combination that 1970s running product used because the palette had not yet been taken over by black and neon.
Utility
Two builds. Faded blue denim, straight cut, cropped at the ankle, a white tee and a red detail in the top half so the scarlet stripe belongs to the fit. Or short shorts and a vintage sports tee in summer with a crew sock pulled slightly up, which is how these shoes were actually worn. Correct for daytime, warm weather and long walks on flat ground, not a training shoe by any modern standard. Retro runners run narrow and slightly short in the toe, so most people take a half size up. Nylon and suede uppers clean best with a soft brush and minimal water, spot clean rather than soak, and keep a light blue midsole from greying by wiping the sidewall after wear instead of once a season.
Influence
Retro running silhouettes came back because people got tired of being sold cushioning, and the SL 72 sits at the front of that shift for adidas, alongside the terrace shoes that made Originals a lifestyle business. The Trefoil that marks this line was designed in 1971 and carried the whole brand until 1997, so a 1970s runner wearing it is not a costume reference, it is the same badge on the same era of product. Light blue and scarlet reads as vintage without needing an aged sole or a fake yellowed midsole, which is the more confident way to do heritage: correct colour, correct proportion, and no artificial patina.
Construction
The construction logic is subtraction. A low, thin profile keeps the foot close to the ground, a wedge shaped heel gives a small amount of lift without turning into a stack, and the Three Stripes run along the flank as a structural element in the tradition adidas has kept since the stripes were stitched on to reinforce the upper. This has none of the modern midsole technology the brand later became known for, no Boost and no engineered plate, which is exactly the appeal: you feel the pavement, and the shoe flexes with your foot from the first wear. Light blue is a colourway that shows every mark on the toe and every scuff on the midsole sidewall.
