Part of the Balenciaga Speed line. This release has a knit upper in White. The Speed Sneaker is Balenciaga's silhouette, a sock shaped shoe that removed laces, tongue and structure and asked whether a sneaker needed any of them. Bringing adidas into it puts two very different logics in the same object: a knit fashion shoe designed to look like clothing, and a company whose whole identity was built on a banding device it bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 and stitched onto uppers because it reinforced them. White is the version where that tension is most visible, since nothing is hidden by contrast. It is a pure shape, and the co branding has to earn its place on a surface with no panels to hide behind.
This is a shoe for tailored or loose clothing, not for gym kit. Recipe one: wide black trousers with a break just above the collar and a fine grey knit, so the sock silhouette reads as an extension of the leg line. Recipe two: white or ecru trousers with a black shirt, a high contrast build where the shoe's white knit connects to the trousers and the collar becomes the only visible line. Knit uppers in white are the hardest thing to keep clean, so spray a fabric protector before the first wear and spot clean with foam rather than water. Never machine wash a bonded sole. Pull it on by the collar, not the heel.
adidas has spent decades handing its identity to outside designers, having effectively invented the modern fashion designer sneaker partnership with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney from 2004, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. A luxury house collaboration inverts that: instead of a designer working inside adidas, adidas appears inside a house's own silhouette. That is only possible because the Three Stripes have become a universally readable mark, the same universality that let the Superstar and the Stan Smith become the base layer of European terrace and casual dressing. In white, the mark is the only sportswear signal on an otherwise fashion object.
A Speed style build is a knit sock upper with a stretch collar that pulls on rather than laces up, bonded to a thin, light sole unit, so the shoe holds the foot by tension instead of by lacing. That construction has consequences: fit is decided by the knit's stretch rather than adjustable, and the shoe reads as a single continuous piece from ankle to toe. In White the knit's texture and any co branding are the only surface events, so the finish quality is fully exposed. Structurally there is very little between your foot and the ground, which is why this silhouette wears more like a technical sock than like a trainer and needs care around abrasion.
