Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 4 September 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Baroque Brown/Black/Laser Orange/Racer Pink. Biohack belongs to a category of Jordan release where the colourway is named like a concept rather than a kit. The High OG is the model's flagship configuration, the full original cut with the earliest era detailing, and it is the version the brand reserves for stories it wants told properly. What sits under the name is the shape Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, in a deal that included royalties because Nike wanted to buy an identity rather than rent a reputation. Nike planned for 3 million dollars over three years; the first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe passed 150 million. A concept name is what you use when the shape needs no introduction.
Complex uppers need blunt clothing. First recipe: heavy grey sweats and a plain white tee, no logos, the shoe carrying every detail in the fit. Second: dark selvedge denim with a black overshirt, sleeves pushed, letting the tonal panels appear as you walk. Never pair it with another busy piece, and avoid patterned socks: they compete at exactly the wrong height. Occasion is evenings, gigs, weekends, not offices and not rain. Lace all eyelets for support on long days. Clean with a soft brush and mild soap, work panel by panel, dry naturally away from heat, and store somewhere cool and dry rather than sealed in plastic.
Jordan Brand moved well beyond basketball: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016, first association football club sponsorship with Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, about 5.1 billion dollars generated for Nike by 2022, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Jordan himself under the royalty deal struck in 1984. Concept driven High OG releases are what that money buys: the freedom to treat a 1985 basketball shoe as a canvas. The 1 anchors a resale market valued around 2 billion dollars, and story led names travel through it faster than colours alone.
The High OG is assembled from separate leather panels stitched over one another, which is why a layered palette suits it: each piece can carry its own tone and the shoe still reads as one object. Collar height is the functional variable, laced tight for ankle lock or left loose so the leather folds down into the shape most people actually wear. The Wings mark sits at the collar as the earliest era logo, the mark that predates the Jumpman becoming the house signature. Rubber outsole with the forefoot pivot circle. Multi tone uppers show dirt at different rates per panel, so clean the shoe as a whole and avoid strong solvents that can lift one tone and leave the rest.
