    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 25 March 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Dutch Blue/Smoke Grey/Sail. Tokyo 96 names a city and a year, and it belongs to a pattern the brand has repeated since it stopped being an American basketball product. Jordan Brand has moved well outside its home sport, becoming sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016 and sponsoring Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, its first association football club. City coded releases work the same way, using the Air Jordan 1 as a passport stamp. The vintage designation on this low points at the finish rather than the shape: the base is still the panel pattern Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore for the shoe that reached the public on 1 April 1985, treated to read as though it has already lived a life.
Worn finishes pair with worn clothes. First: faded denim with a natural hem, a washed tee, a soft flannel or chore coat, nothing crisp anywhere in the fit. Second: play against it, black tailored trousers and a clean knit, letting the aged shoe do the softening under sharp lines, which is the more interesting of the two looks. Avoid brand new white anything nearby, since it makes the vintage tone read as dirt rather than as design. Good for casual daily wear where you do not want to worry about the first scuff. Brush lightly, avoid whitening products completely, spot clean only, and let them dry naturally away from sun.
Aged finishes and city names are how a forty year old silhouette keeps generating new meaning without changing shape. The Air Jordan 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX inside a resale market valued near 2 billion dollars, and a large part of that value is nostalgia for the physical condition of old pairs rather than for the pairs themselves. A shoe manufactured to look like history is the brand selling that feeling directly. It sits alongside the collaboration programme, which runs from Off-White under Virgil Abloh through Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, as another way of making the same outline feel new.
A vintage finish changes how you should think about this shoe entirely. The panel construction is standard low cut Air Jordan 1, separated toe, quarter and heel pieces with the ankle collar removed, but the surfaces are tuned to look worn from the first day, which means scuffs and creases integrate rather than stand out. That is a real advantage in daily wear and a real problem if you like your sneakers pristine, since you cannot clean a shoe back to a brightness it never had. Nike Air did not enter the line until the Air Jordan 2, so the ride is flat and firm. Clean gently and accept the patina, because aggressive cleaning will pull the intended tone unevenly.
