Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 November 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a canvas upper in Obsidian/French Blue/Ashen Slate/White. Craft Inside Out turns the Air Jordan 1 Mid into a diagram of itself. The model's fame rests on a panel map Peter Moore drew in the mid eighties, toe, quarter, Swoosh, collar and heel, and the Inside Out treatment exposes the construction that map usually hides: raw edges, reversed materials, seams shown rather than finished. In obsidian, a deep blue black, the effect stays serious instead of novelty, because the colour holds all those textures at one value. It belongs to the part of the line's life that began in 1997, when Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division and the first model turned into a platform for design ideas rather than a court shoe with new colours.
Recipe one, texture on texture: black wide leg wool trousers, a navy heavy knit and a waxed jacket, so the raw edges read as intentional against soft fabrics. Recipe two, dark denim: indigo jeans cuffed once, a grey sweat and a black bomber, with the obsidian pulling the blue out of the denim. Occasion is street, evening, colder months. Fit is standard length with a mid collar that suits a crew sock. Care differs from a standard leather 1: use a dry brush first, keep water off the reversed panels, avoid saddle soap and heavy conditioners which will flatten the nap, and let the raw edges wear rather than trimming them.
By 2022 Jordan Brand was generating around five point one billion dollars for Nike, and that scale is what funds experiments like this: a shoe whose whole idea is showing its own construction. The collaboration programme, from Off-White under Virgil Abloh to Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, normalised deconstruction on this silhouette, so a house made version reads as continuity rather than a stunt. The cultural foundation is older and simpler: basketball meeting hip hop, Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the earliest advertising, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z making the shoes a lyric. Obsidian is how you take part in all that without being loud about it.
Layered leather and textile panels in obsidian, assembled so the reversed and unfinished surfaces sit on the outside, with exposed stitching and raw edging along the overlays. The mid collar is padded and sits lower than the OG high, which is why it wears easily under a hem. The first model predates the Nike Air cushioning that entered the line from the second shoe, so the ride is a stitched cupsole and foam wedge, firm and flat. Suede-like reversed surfaces mark differently from smooth leather: they hold dust and take water stains rather than scuffs, so brushing beats wiping. Raw edges will soften and fray slightly with wear, which is the intended behaviour of this build.
