Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 14 February 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a patent leather upper in Obsidian/Blue Chill-White. OG on a 1 means the shoe is built back to the original specification rather than the simplified retail version: the taller cut, the older shape through the toe, the Wings logo on the collar and the Nike Air tongue label the earliest pairs carried. Blue Chill puts a soft, cold blue where the Chicago red would sit, over a white leather base with black holding the collar and heel. It is a colourway that would have been unthinkable on a basketball floor when Peter Moore drew this shoe with Bruce Kilgore, because the league's uniform rule of the era pushed shoes toward white. That is exactly why the modern 1 keeps reaching for colours the original could never have worn.
Cold blue on white is a shoe for daylight. Mid wash straight leg jeans, a white oxford worn open over a tee, and the blue reads as part of the outfit rather than an accent. Alternatively go sporty: navy track pants with a taper, a grey hoodie, and let the black collar tie into the darker top half. High cut looks best with a cuff that breaks just above the collar, so hem accordingly rather than bunching denim over the ankle. Care is the usual white leather routine: damp cloth after each wear, a soft brush at the perforations, and no washing machine. Pale blue leather takes dye transfer from raw denim, so treat both surfaces before pairing them.
The 1 carries the founding myth of the whole division. It sold out its first 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars, and it did that with Spike Lee playing Mars Blackmon in the advertising and the Banned campaign turning the league's 5,000 dollar per game fine into a marketing asset. From there it moved into hip hop through 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and became the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity. Pale colourways like this one live off that inheritance: the shape is instantly legible from across a street, so the colour only has to be new. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, which is the reason the shape stays sacred.
High cut, leather panelled, perforated at the toe, stitched rather than welded, and mounted on a rubber cupsole. The OG treatment means a taller ankle collar and a fuller toe box than the standard retro pattern, so the shoe sits differently on the foot and takes a little longer to break in. Blue Chill is a pale, chalky blue, which means it shows dirt at the swoosh edge before the white does. Black on the collar and heel gives you the visual anchor and hides most of the wear that ankle contact creates. There is no visible air window on this model, so what you feel underfoot is a firm board and a leather upper doing the support work, which is the honest character of the original last.
