Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 14 May 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 11 line. This release has the Black/Gym Red/White/Sail colourway. The Air Jordan XI is the model that put patent leather on a basketball court. That decision, made during Tinker Hatfield's run when the line had become a design series with a new argument each year, brought a formal wear material into performance footwear and is the reason this silhouette gets worn with tailoring rather than only with sportswear. The Retro Low takes that idea and removes the ankle, leaving the shine, the sole line and the shape without the height. In a mostly dark, numerically named colourway, it is the least theatrical way to own the most theatrical material decision in the brand's history.
Use the shine. Recipe one: black tailored trousers with a clean break, a black knit, no visible sock, so the shoe reads as a dress shoe alternative. Recipe two: dark denim with a short break, a white shirt, a wool overcoat, letting the patent panels catch light against matte fabric. Do not pair patent leather with a shiny jacket or trousers; one reflective surface per outfit. Low cuts suit warm weather and long evenings. Patent wipes clean with a soft damp cloth in seconds, which is its main practical advantage, but it scuffs deeply if you kick a kerb, and creases in it never come out.
Patent leather is why the XI is the Jordan people wear to weddings. It was an unusual move for a basketball shoe and it permanently changed what the category was allowed to look like, which is the same instinct that later let luxury houses work with the brand: Dior and Comme des Garcons sit on the collaborator list alongside Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Supreme and KAWS. The XI is also the clearest proof that this line stopped being sports equipment and became design. It arrived from a house that started by buying a rookie's identity because a superstar was out of budget, and ended up dictating formality in footwear.
Patent leather is the defining surface here: it reflects rather than absorbs light, wipes clean more easily than any napped material, and creases in sharp visible lines rather than soft ones. Cutting the XI low means less of that surface on show and a shoe that behaves like a court shoe crossed with a loafer. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model, and later models in the series adopted carbon fibre shank plates for torsional stiffness. Jordan Brand publishes no per colourway material sheet, so confirm in hand where the patent panels stop and what the upper above them is made from.
