Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 30 December 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 2 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Varsity Red/Black. The Air Jordan 2 is the hinge in the whole line, and this retro brings it back in white with varsity red and black, the palette closest to the original Chicago identity. The 2 is the model where Nike Air cushioning entered the series, and it is the last chapter before Nike handed the line to Tinker Hatfield, who from the Air Jordan III onward turned a basketball shoe into a design series with its own recurring language. That makes the 2 the quiet one: it has no elephant print, no patent leather, no Jumpman era iconography weighing it down. What it has is a cleaner, more restrained shape than anything that came after, and a colourway that ties it straight back to 1985.
The 2 has a cleaner outline than the later models, so it takes tailoring better than most basketball retros. Try grey wool trousers with a white shirt and no other colour, letting the red and black accents finish the outfit. The casual version is straight leg dark denim with a heavy white tee, which is the honest 1980s reading of the shoe. Avoid heavy streetwear layering, which fights the shoe's relatively restrained shape. Fit tends to run true through the midfoot for most people. Protect the white leather from day one, clean red panels with a barely damp cloth so nothing bleeds, and keep the pair out of heat where white midsoles yellow.
The 2 rarely gets named in music or film the way the 1 and later models do, and that is part of its appeal now. Air Jordan reached culture through basketball meeting hip hop, with Spike Lee directing the earliest advertising as Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing the shoes. The line went on to create sneaker collecting as a mass activity, with 1985 originals trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX. The 2 sits just outside that spotlight, which means wearing one signals that you followed the series through rather than picking up the two or three models everyone knows.
This is the first Air Jordan with Nike Air cushioning underfoot, which is the single most important construction fact about the model and the reason it feels different from the 1. Where the 1 rides flat foam over a rubber cupsole, the 2 introduced the air unit that every later model builds on. Above that, the 2 is the least busy upper in the early run, with fewer visible panel breaks and no exposed Swoosh, so the shape carries the design rather than the detailing. A white base with red and black accents is high maintenance in the usual way: protect the white before first wear, and expect the midsole to be the first area that ages visibly.
