Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 22 May 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Solar Flare/Total Crimson Abyss. J Balvin is an artist collaborator for Jordan Brand, and Rio is his register: colour treated as a mood rather than as team identity. He got the Air Jordan 3 to work on, which is not a neutral choice. The 3 is the model where Tinker Hatfield took the line over and gave it a permanent visual language, introducing the cracked elephant print and putting the Jumpman on the tongue in place of the earlier Wings mark. Handing a musician the shoe that made this a design house, rather than a newer silhouette with less to lose, is the brand saying its archive belongs to culture now as much as it belongs to basketball.
Let the shoe be the loudest thing you own that day. First: stone or off white trousers with a plain tee, so every tone on the upper reads clearly and nothing on your body competes with it. Second: all black, from trousers to tee, which turns the colour on your feet into the only event in the outfit. The 3 has volume, so keep hems short of the toe box. Protector spray before first wear, brush the elephant print dry, foam clean the coloured panels gently and infrequently, and store them boxed away from sunlight, which is what fades a collaboration pair fastest.
The music roster is now central to how this brand designs. Alongside Balvin sit Drake, Billie Eilish, Eminem and Nicki Minaj as artist collaborators, and Travis Scott as a collaborator whose Cactus Jack work covered the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6. On the design side the programme reaches Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. All of it descends from the original collision of basketball and hip hop, when 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z were naming Jordan and his sneakers in records nobody at Nike had commissioned, and Spike Lee was directing the advertising as Mars Blackmon.
Collaboration pairs usually carry more than one surface, and this one should be judged panel by panel. The elephant print introduced on this model has a cracked texture that traps dirt and demands a dry brush rather than a wet cloth. Any coloured or specially finished panels need a mild foam and a light touch, and bright dyes shift under prolonged sun. Nike Air has sat under these shoes since the second Air Jordan. The practical rule is simple: use the gentlest method that works, and treat each material on the upper as if it were a separate shoe.
