Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 22 January 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Black/Black/Light Graphite. Black Cat is the Air Jordan 4 with the colour removed entirely, every panel in black, so the model becomes a study in texture and shadow. It is the most extreme thing you can do to a shoe that Tinker Hatfield designed to show its structure. The 4 came out of the stretch after the Air Jordan 3 when the line became a design series with its own recurring hardware, and its whole appeal was exposed parts: netting, plastic, a moulded heel. Blacking all of it out forces you to read the shoe by shape alone. That restraint is why this colourway has outlasted almost every louder version of the model.
Full black is the most versatile 4 there is. Wear it with black wide leg trousers and a black overshirt for a tonal fit where only texture separates the pieces. Or break it: mid grey sweatpants with a black hooded top, so the shoe closes the outfit rather than disappearing into it. It handles winter and rain better than any light colourway, though wet napped panels still need drying flat at room temperature. Give it a straight or wide leg; the 4 has bulk. Brush after wear, keep grit out of the netting, and loosen the laces in storage so the plastic wings are not stressed.
All black Jordans occupy a particular place in the culture the brand built out of basketball and hip hop, where 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all referenced the shoes. They are the pairs worn by people who want the silhouette recognised without announcing a colourway. The 4 carries extra weight because it is one of the models Travis Scott has worked on under Cactus Jack, alongside the 1 and the 6, and because Jordan Brand's collaboration list, Off-White with Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, keeps the shape in fashion conversation.
Tonal black is unforgiving in a good way: it shows the silhouette and hides everything else. The mesh netting panels still open the side walls, the plastic lace wings still sit at the throat for lacing tension, and the moulded heel counter still locks the rear foot, but they read as changes in finish rather than in colour. Nike Air cushioning sits underneath, present in the line from the Air Jordan 2 onward, which makes this one of the more comfortable retros for long days. Nubuck style black panels hold dust visibly, so brush dry often; water leaves marks on dark napped surfaces that do not fully disappear.
