Culture Note™
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 26 July 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Black/Fire Red/Deep Royal Blue/Dark Smoke Grey/Tech Grey. Rare Air is one of the phrases the line has carried since its earliest years, and putting it in gold lettering on an Air Jordan 4 turns a slogan into a design element. The 4 comes from Tinker Hatfield, who took over the series from the Air Jordan III and gave it a language of exposed hardware and engineered panels rather than plain leather. Nike Air cushioning had been in the line since the Air Jordan II, so by the 4 the brand could spend its attention on how a basketball shoe should look. Gold lettering on this model is Jordan Brand referencing its own vocabulary rather than a team or a season.
Two fits. Understated around the gold: black wide leg trousers, a black tee, and a grey jacket, so the lettering is the only bright detail. Or match the metal once: brown or olive workwear trousers with a cream knit and a gold toned watch or chain, which makes the lettering look intentional rather than incidental. The 4 sits under a wider leg better than a slim one. Sizing is close to true to size and snug over a high instep, which is what the lace wings are for. Brush the netting dry, wipe the lettering gently, and keep the midsole clean because it is the largest visible surface.
Before the Jumpman there was the Wings logo, a basketball with wings, which marked the earliest era of the line and still signals it. The Jumpman itself came about after Peter Moore saw a Jacobus Rentmeester photograph shot before the 1984 Olympics and had Jordan recreate the pose in Bulls gear; Rentmeester sued Nike over it in 2015 and the Ninth Circuit ruled for Nike in February 2018. Those marks now sit on a line whose original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, inside a resale market valued at roughly two billion dollars. Gold lettering is a shoe leaning into that self awareness on purpose.
Mesh netting in the side quarters, plastic lace wings on both sides for adjustable lockdown, a moulded heel counter and a thick supportive midsole with Nike Air underneath: that is the 4, and none of it has been softened for the retro. The gold lettering is a printed or applied finish rather than a dye, so it wears differently from the panels around it, lifting at edges and along flex lines rather than fading evenly. Keep brushes and abrasive cleaners off the lettering entirely, use a soft damp cloth there, and brush the netting dry so cloth does not snag in the mesh.
