Released on 8 August 2024 and part of the Air Jordan 4 RM line. This release has a suede upper in Anthracite/Anthracite/University Red/White. Jordan Brand runs a collaboration programme that reaches across streetwear, luxury and music, from Off-White under Virgil Abloh to Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme, KAWS and Travis Scott's Cactus Jack releases on the 1, 4 and 6. This is an SP release built on the 4 platform and carrying Nigel Sylvester's name on the box, which places it in that partner programme rather than in the general release calendar. Driveway Grey names its own reference point: not a court, not a stadium, but the concrete a shoe actually lives on. That is a very particular way to read the Air Jordan 4, a model that came out of the Tinker Hatfield era when the line first learned to speak in codes rather than colours.
Two recipes. First, grey on grey: heavyweight grey sweatpants and a washed grey crewneck, letting the tonal run flatten out so the SP detailing is the only thing that breaks the surface. Second, raw indigo denim with a black work jacket, where the grey acts as the neutral joint between two hard colours. This is a shoe designed around street wear rather than court use, so treat scuffs on the midsole as patina and do not chase them. The 4 platform fits snug through the forefoot, so size true and lace from the bottom eyelets up. Brush dust weekly and avoid detergent on any suede or nubuck panelling.
The collaboration programme is how Jordan Brand stays relevant to people who have no memory of the player. Off-White, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS on the design side and Travis Scott, Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj on the music side turned a Nike division created in 1997 into a five billion dollar business by 2022. Special project releases like this one sit at the centre of that machine, small runs that set the temperature for the general release calendar behind them. The resale economy that grew around Air Jordan, valued at roughly two billion dollars, exists precisely because of shoes issued in numbers like these.
RM is Jordan Brand's remastered take on the 4 platform rather than a straight Retro reissue, so expect the silhouette's recognisable geometry with a modern build underneath rather than a faithful reproduction of the original tooling. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the second model and is what makes the 4 shape feel like equipment. Grey is the most forgiving colour Jordan makes: it takes dust without looking dirty and it ages into something closer to the driveway concept than a pristine pair ever would. Because this is an SP, expect the partner detailing to sit in the small parts, the hits you notice at arm's length rather than across a room. Clean it gently and let the wear accumulate.
