Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 2 May 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 5 line. This release has a leather upper in True White/Fire Red/Black/Metallic Silver. Fire Red is the Air Jordan 5's founding colour story, the white and red pairing the model wore when Tinker Hatfield first put it out during the stretch that turned the line into a design series rather than a yearly signature shoe. Red, black and white already worked as Jordan Brand colours in themselves, tied to Chicago, and the 5's layered midsole geometry gives that palette more surface to work across than a flatter silhouette would. This 2020 retro brings the original make up back under style code DA1911 102, which is how most people now own a colourway that predates them.
White and red is loud, so the rest of the outfit should not be. Recipe one: black straight leg denim, a white tee, a black bomber, where the red in the sole is the only colour in the fit. Recipe two: grey sweat trousers, a white hoodie, a red cap as a single deliberate echo, the sportswear read. Keep it away from navy and away from any second red. Best for dry days, evenings and weekends. Size true, lace through every eyelet to stop heel lift, and be strict about cleaning: white uppers on a shoe with this much midsole surface pick up grime quickly and look tired fast if ignored.
Original era colourways carry the resale market. Air Jordan created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, original pairs from the mid eighties have traded around twenty thousand dollars on the secondary market, and the whole resale economy the brand anchors has been valued at roughly two billion dollars. The cultural groundwork was laid earlier, through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and through 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordans in their music. Michael Jordan is the founding signature athlete and namesake, signed to Nike in 1984 on a six year deal worth about three times any other in the league.
White upper with fire red running through the midsole and accents is a high contrast build, so the 5's stacked panelling and the geometry along the sole become the main event. Nike Air cushioning, in the line since the Air Jordan II, sits underneath. The 5 has more internal volume than it looks, so lace properly through the midfoot or your heel will lift. Care is the usual white shoe discipline: protect before first wear, foam cleaner on the midsole, damp cloth on the upper, and clean the same day so red dye and road grime do not settle into the white. Wear it as a lifestyle shoe rather than on court.
