Designed by Tinker Hatfield and part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. This release has a suede upper in Copper Moon/Campfire Orange/Sail/White. The Air Max line arrived in 1987 and changed what a shoe was allowed to show. Nike had been sealing pressurised gas into midsoles for cushioning, and the decision to cut a window into the foam and let people see it turned an engineering detail into the most recognisable design device in sportswear. The 90 is the version that layered panels and bright accents over that window until the shoe read as graphic rather than technical. Campfire Orange is a warm, smoky orange rather than a neon one, which softens the model's usual aggression. It gives a shoe built on visible technology an earthier, almost outdoor register while keeping the Air unit doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Two ways. Warm layers: brown or olive cargos, a cream knit and a chore jacket, the smoky orange sitting comfortably inside an autumn palette. Contrast: grey sweatpants or dark denim with a black hoodie, where the orange accent does all the work and the rest stays plain. Air Max 90s suit volume at the hem and look odd with anything slim and cropped. Fit is usually true with a snug midfoot. Keep mesh out of heavy rain, brush the upper dry, use an eraser on the midsole sidewall, and store away from heat and sun, since old style foam and glued layers both dislike hot cupboards.
The Air Max is the model that made the technology itself the status object, which is unusual. People did not want the shoe because an athlete wore it. They wanted it because they could see the thing that made it work. That is a rare kind of design victory, and it is why the 90 keeps returning in new colours rather than being retired.
An Air Max 90 is built in layers: a mesh and panel upper with overlays stacked over each other, a moulded heel counter, and a midsole with the pressurised Air window sitting where the impact is highest. That window is not decoration. It is the cushioning made legible, the idea Nike introduced in 1987 and has never let go of. Campfire Orange on the accent panels against a neutral base means the layered construction stays readable, since each overlay is defined by where the colour stops. Mesh and layered uppers need brushing rather than washing, and the midsole responds to an eraser on the sidewall. Dry naturally away from heat so the glue holding the layers stays put.
