    Culture Note™

Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 1 January 2025 as part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. This release has a synthetic upper in White/Black. Putting the Air Max 90 on a golf course is a joke that turned out to be a good idea. The 90 belongs to the family that began when the Air Max arrived in 1987 and made cushioning a visible design feature, turning the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole into something you could point at. Golf is a walking sport, four hours of it, which is exactly the problem Air was built to solve. In White, Black and Gum this version keeps the country club palette while carrying the mudguard, layered panels and heel window that made the 90 a city shoe across three decades. It is the rare crossover where the silhouette earns its place on function rather than novelty.
On the course: cropped or ankle length technical trousers in stone or black with a plain polo, letting the gum outsole warm up an otherwise cold white and black kit. Off the course: white shorts or light chinos with a knit polo, which keeps the golf reference legible without the full uniform. It suits walking rounds, driving range afternoons and clubhouse hours, and it is comfortable enough for travel to and from a course. Size as you would a standard Air Max 90, usually your regular Nike length. Clean grass stains immediately with cool water and mild soap, brush the outsole grooves clear of turf, and let it air dry rather than putting it near a heater.
Nike's move into golf followed the pattern it has used everywhere: take a silhouette people already trust and rebuild it for the sport. The Air Max 90 arrives with an existing cultural charge, having moved out of running in the 1980s and 1990s into urban and hip hop fashion and then into the athleisure vocabulary that shapes how people dress casually. Wearing that shoe on a course collapses the distance between clubhouse dress codes and street dress, which is the direction golf has been travelling anyway. Nike has been arguing that sport belongs to everyone since Just Do It first aired on 1 July 1988 with 80 year old runner Walt Stack.
The golf conversion happens below the sidewall. The familiar layered 90 upper is treated for weather and built to shed morning dew, while the outsole swaps the waffle inspired road tread for an integrated traction pattern designed to grip turf through a swing without damaging greens, finished here in gum rubber. The visible Air unit still sits in the heel, doing the work it was designed for in 1987, which on a course means eighteen holes of walking rather than a run. Expect a stable, slightly wider platform and a more secure lacing setup than the lifestyle version. White uppers on grass and sand pick up staining fast, so a post round wipe down is part of the routine.
