Designed by Tobie Hatfield and released on 3 March 2022 as part of Nike's Air Presto line. This release has a synthetic upper. The Presto was Nike's argument that a shoe could be sized like a t shirt and built like one, with a stretch upper held in place by an external cage instead of a conventional laced construction. It is one of the few genuinely strange silhouettes the company has ever put into mass production, which is why it has been rebuilt and re themed repeatedly. The Mid Utility version adds height and hardware to a shape that started out as the least structured shoe in the range, and Bossk is the nickname this colourway travels under, applied by the audience rather than printed on the box.
Recipe one: tapered technical trousers with a shell jacket, where the cage and the mid collar make sense next to other functional hardware rather than looking like an outlier. Recipe two: black jeans with a plain heavy tee, using the shoe as the only structured element in a soft outfit. Prestos are traditionally sized in ranges rather than half sizes, so fit is more forgiving than usual but harder to fine tune. The stretch upper suits wide feet better than most silhouettes. Keep them out of heavy rain, since stretch textiles hold water, and air dry them slowly rather than putting them anywhere near a radiator.
Nike has kept a foot in the future even when the market wanted heritage: it acquired the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021, moving the idea of a sneaker away from physical product entirely. The Presto belongs to the same impulse in physical form, a shoe that questioned what an upper needed to be. Colourway nicknames like this one are part of a collecting culture that has been reading Nike products as a language since the 1980s, when Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became status objects in urban style. The audience names the shoes, and the names stick harder than the marketing.
The Presto idea is minimal material doing maximum work, which is the same instinct behind Flywire, the cable system Nike uses to hold a foot to the platform without adding bulk to the upper. Here the stretch panel does the containment and the cage supplies the structure, so the shoe wraps rather than clamps. A Mid Utility build raises the collar and adds functional hardware, which changes the character from slipper like to technical. Stretch textiles are difficult to clean because dirt sits inside the weave rather than on top of it, so use a foam cleaner worked gently with a soft brush and never soak the upper.
