    Culture Note™

Released on 5 June 2024 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Pegasus 41 line. This release has a mesh upper in Astronomy Blue/Black/Baltic Blue/Hot Punch. The Pegasus is Nike's ordinary-miles shoe, and that is a compliment. The company was founded in 1964 by a track coach and his runner, and its first product was simply a lighter shoe for people who ran a lot, sold from a car boot at meets in Oregon. Everything glamorous that followed sits on top of that job. The 41 is the current turn of the workhorse, the model you buy when you need something that will absorb five runs a week without asking questions. Astronomy Blue gives it the one thing a daily trainer usually lacks: a deep, cool blue with real saturation, so the shoe you wear most often is not the dullest thing in your rotation.
Two uses. Training: easy runs, long runs and commuting mileage, worn with a mid-height technical sock and shorts or tights, where the blue keeps you visible in low light better than a monochrome trainer will. Casual: dark straight-leg jeans or grey fleece joggers with a navy or black shell, where Astronomy Blue works as a colour block rather than a running signal. Size half up if you run long and your feet swell late in a session. Rotate with a second pair if you are running most days, since giving the foam a day to recover extends its life more than any cleaning routine. Brush off dried mud, wash the laces separately and never put the shoe through a dryer.
Track is where Nike's culture actually starts. Steve Prefontaine, coached by Bowerman at Oregon, became the brand's first track endorser and its symbol of running as an attitude rather than a hobby, and the athletes who followed, Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix, kept that line unbroken. The Pegasus is where that inheritance meets ordinary runners. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, was aimed squarely at this shoe's buyer rather than at elites, which is why it landed and why Advertising Age later named it a top five slogan of the twentieth century.
Air Zoom in the name points at the thing that made Nike's cushioning famous. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, and from the 1987 Air Max onward it turned cushioning itself into a design feature rather than a hidden component. In a daily trainer that unit is tuned for repetition instead of racing, so the ride is protective and consistent rather than spring-loaded. The upper is engineered mesh with a padded collar and heel, built for breathability across long easy efforts, and the outsole is rubber over the high-wear zones. Astronomy Blue is a full-coverage colour, which hides road grime far better than the white and grey trainers most people default to.
