Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 16 January 2025 as part of adidas's Superstar line. This release has a textile upper in Core Black/Carbon/Gold Metallic. This is the Superstar, which is to say the single most consequential shoe adidas ever made, handed to CLOT for a Chinese New Year treatment. The Superstar arrived in 1969 as a low top with a moulded rubber shell toe, built to protect players' feet under the basket, and by 1973 it was reportedly on the feet of more than 75 percent of NBA players. A Lunar New Year release puts that shell toe into a specifically cultural register rather than a sporting one, which is the whole reason the Superstar remains collaboration territory: it is a shape people already have feelings about, so a partner only has to redirect those feelings.
Give it room to be seen. Loose black tailored trousers with a plain crewneck lets the shell toe and the collaboration detailing carry the outfit without competition. For a lower key read, straight indigo denim with a heavy grey hoodie and the hem stacked just above the toe cap works year round. The Superstar runs long and flat, so a half size down suits most feet and a thicker sock helps if you are between sizes. Keep the shell toe clean with a damp cloth and a soft brush, since rubber yellows with sun exposure, and store collaboration pairs out of direct light rather than on a windowsill.
The Superstar is the shoe that gave adidas a second life it did not design. It ruled 1970s NBA courts through wearers including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin, then hip hop adopted it wholesale, and Run-DMC's My Adidas in 1986 turned that adoption into the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. It later became a base layer of European terrace and casual dressing alongside the Stan Smith, and adidas sold over 15 million pairs in 2015 alone. A collaborator working on this silhouette is working on all of that history at once, not on a blank shoe.
The defining element is the shell toe, a moulded rubber cap that is the most copied silhouette detail adidas has produced, sitting ahead of a leather upper carrying the Three Stripes as perforated panels. That toe cap was engineering before it was iconography, made to stop the toe box collapsing under a player's weight. On a Chinese New Year build, expect the material and finishing choices to carry the story while the underlying architecture stays exactly as it has been for decades: flat rubber outsole, low collar, stripes stitched into the quarter. adidas rarely lets partners touch the bones of this shoe, and that restraint is why the shape survives every reinterpretation.
