Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 27 March 2021 as part of Nike's Air Max 1 line. This release has the Net/Deep Red/Orange Blaze colourway. CLOT's Kiss of Death is one of the few collaborations that changed what people expected a Nike collaboration to be, and the 2021 return brought it back onto the Air Max 1, the model where visible Air started in 1987. The concept was always about revealing what is underneath: a translucent upper over an inner layer, so the shoe shows you its own anatomy. That is a natural fit for a silhouette whose entire innovation was making the hidden cushioning unit visible through a window in the midsole. Nike cut that window because it wanted people to see the engineering. CLOT applied the same logic to the upper. The 2021 release is the idea returning to the shoe that justified it.
Transparency is the whole point, so let people see it. Wear the shoe with cropped or cuffed trousers, black or grey, and a plain tee, so nothing hangs over the upper. Your socks become part of the design: a clean white or a strong solid colour will read through the clear panels, so choose them deliberately rather than by accident. For an evening version, pair with slim black trousers and a technical shell. This is a wear it dry shoe. Translucent panels yellow with UV and heat, so store it out of sunlight, clean with a soft cloth and mild soap rather than solvents, and keep it away from rain and grit, which lodges between the layers where you cannot reach.
Nike's collaboration culture ranges from corporate to creative, from the Nike and Apple partnership behind Nike+ to artist work such as the digital piece it did with Takashi Murakami in 2022. Kiss of Death sits in a different lane: a partner led idea that treated the sneaker as a transparent object and gave a generation of collectors a reference point. It also lands on the model that carried Nike into fashion, since Air Max shoes joined Air Jordans and Air Force 1s as staples of urban and hip hop dress from the 1980s and then of 1990s and 2000s casual style. This is a collector's shoe that earned the status through a design idea rather than an athlete.
The defining element is a translucent upper worked over an inner layer, so the construction becomes the graphic. That is a fragile way to build a sneaker and it changes how you treat it, because a clear panel shows every mark that a suede panel would hide. Under it sits the standard Air Max 1 platform: a foam midsole with the visible Nike Air unit in the heel, the pressurised gas cushioning that has been Nike's signature since 1987, and a waffle influenced rubber outsole descended from Bill Bowerman's kitchen experiment.
