Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 October 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Dark Obsidian/Fierce Pink/White. The Dunk Low earns its living on two colour blocking, and Obsidian Fierce Pink is one of the sharper pairings the shape has worn: deep navy overlays against a light base with hot pink cutting through as the accent. This is the grade school build, which is the reason many people meet the Dunk for the first time on a school corridor rather than a court. Nike itself grew out of a running company founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, and the shoes that made it famous were basketball models that stopped playing basketball. The Dunk is the clearest example: an athletic shape kept alive entirely by how good it looks in colour.
Two outfits. Light wash jeans with a white tee and a navy crewneck, letting the pink read as a single deliberate accent. Or flip it: black joggers and a pink hoodie, so the shoe ties the outfit together instead of interrupting it. This is a school and street shoe, best on dry pavement, and it is not built for sport despite its shape. Grade school sizing runs on its own scale, so measure rather than guessing, and leave growing room at the toe rather than buying tight. Clean smooth leather with a damp cloth and a mild foam, protect the pink panels first since bright colour shows dirt earliest, and air dry only.
Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s and its shoes became staples of mainstream American youth dress, then returned in 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. The Dunk rode that second wave hardest, helped by Nike SB, the skate division whose own history includes a public misstep in 2005 when it used Minor Threat album art and apologised. Skateboarding gave the Dunk its edge and colour blocking gave it its shelf life. A navy and pink pair sits in that lineage: sportswear geometry used as pure graphic design.
Leather panel construction on the low Dunk last: a base colour on the quarter and toe, contrast leather on the Swoosh, eyestay, collar and heel, and a foam midsole over a rubber outsole with a circular pivot pattern. The Dunk has no visible Air unit, so the ride is flat and firm and the shoe is lighter than it looks. Grade school builds carry the same panel layout at a smaller scale, which is why they photograph identically to adult pairs. Obsidian hides scuffs well and the pink shows them, so the accent panels are what to watch. New leather is stiff for about a week before it settles into a comfortable, flat walking shoe.
