    Culture Note™

Released on 3 October 2023 and part of adidas's Forum line. This release has a suede upper in Carbon/Grey Three/Grey Two. The ADV suffix marks the Forum's skate conversion, the version rebuilt for a discipline that abuses shoes on purpose. That is a genuinely adidas story: the Superstar's rubber shell toe existed in 1969 to protect players' feet under the basket, and skate versions of heritage silhouettes follow exactly the same logic of adding armour where a specific sport destroys a shoe. Carbon Grey takes the Forum out of its usual white leather register entirely. A dark, flat grey hides scuffs the way skate colourways are supposed to, and it lets the Three Stripes and the sole line carry the shape rather than a contrast panel. This is the Forum as a working shoe rather than a display one, which is the more interesting version of it.
Carbon Grey wants contrast rather than coordination. Recipe one: loose black denim with a washed graphic tee and a grey hoodie, where the shoe sits comfortably in the middle of a monochrome stack and does not fight the trousers. Recipe two: olive cargo pants with a cream crewneck, where the flat grey stops the earth tones from getting muddy. Fit is standard adidas leather, true to size, and the padded collar packs down after a fortnight. Wear these when the shoe is expected to take damage, which is most days. Skip the suede protector spray if you want them to age; use it if you do not. Knock grip dust off with a stiff brush, spot clean with soap and cold water, and replace laces before you replace the shoe.
The Forum and its siblings crossed from basketball into street dressing through the same door the Superstar did. Run-DMC put shell toes in front of a Madison Square Garden crowd on their own initiative, the song came before any deal, and the endorsement that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company. That pattern of adoption before sponsorship is exactly how adidas ended up in skateboarding too: the shoes were already being worn, then the brand built for it. The Superstar and Stan Smith became the base layer of European terrace and casual dressing, and the Forum ADV is the skate dialect of the same accent, worn by people who need the shoe to last a session.
Skate builds change a heritage silhouette in specific places: reinforcement across the ollie area, a suede or heavier leather where the board grip attacks the upper, and a vulcanised style outsole tuned for board feel rather than court traction. The Forum's panelled construction suits that, because the Three Stripes are stitched into the sidewall and act as reinforcement rather than decoration, which is how adidas used them from the moment it bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952. Padding through the tongue and collar takes landing impact. Carbon Grey is a functional choice as much as an aesthetic one, since a mid dark grey absorbs griptape marking that would sit permanently on a white upper. Expect the shoe to age visibly rather than cleanly.
